Joe Carnell
Hello, I’m Joe!
I am a trombonist, composer, producer, and mixing/mastering engineer. At the base of all my work is a commitment to musical and self expression. Whether I'm on stage, writing a new song, producing, arranging, or mixing a track, my goal is always the same. To develop, capture, and deliver an authentic, recognisable musical voice.
On the Stage
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to perform across the world in some truly inspiring venues. My live experience ranges from intimate jazz sets at Ronnie Scott’s to playing for large-scale events and crowds at the Royal Albert Hall and Glastonbury. On a wider scale I have been in demand across Europe as appearances at ElbJazz, Rudolstadt Festival, Teatro Rossini, and as a guest with the Milan Conservatory show. Further afield still, I have recently worked providing high-energy, upbeat shows in Dubai.
In the Studio
My work as a composer, producer, and mixing engineer has deeply broadened my musical perspective. I collaborate with artists across the globe and across a wide variety of styles. Working closely with instrumentalists, vocalists, and lyricists has strengthened my awareness of differing expectations and demands across many different genres and the cultures they’re rooted in.
My background in performance and the wide range of styles and genres I have worked in help me view projects and songs holistically, as well as zooming in on the finer details. The story and journey of a song is as important in my mixing, as technical accuracy and minute details are in my productions.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside some world-class musicians such as Chris Potter, Bill Frisell, Olivia Murphy, Pablo Held, Abel Selaocoe, and Neil Cowley.
iola
I started IOLA in 2019 as a place for me and friends to share music we were working on, had been a part of, or just enjoyed. Since then it has grown into a multi-faceted hub where I strive to help musicians create, share, and thrive. My aim for it is to have a community of artists and appreciaters alike, a place where original, creative, authentic voices are given the space and time needed to fully develop.
Due to my performance and studio background, I’m in the fortunate position where I am able to directly help and contribute to this goal, rather than relying on having to hire multiple freelancers to fulfill tasks. My obsession with original music is as deep as ever, and the creation of it in a time where authenticity and originality faces such a great threat is absolutely vital.
Portfolio
This is an original track of mine. I was responsible for the writing, production, recording, and mixing.
I co-produced, recorded the vocalist, and mixed this track
Another modern style track that I was responsible for mixing.
In this track I was responsible for the mix, where the client was after a dreamy, lush soundstage.
This track was a co-write. The artist had a chorus idea and wanted to build out the song, I was responsible for the verses and outro, as well as mixing and providing some vocals.
This was a commission from a lyricist who wanted a country/rock musical setting for their words. I was responsible for writing the music, producing, fixing and recording sessions musicians, and mixing this track
Another commission from the lyricist who had these lyrics from an old band, and wanted to rewrite the music for them into a synth/pop/rock track. I wrote the music, produced, fixed and recorded session musicians, and mixed this track.
This is part of a composition of mine called Music for Days When the World Gets Too Loud. It’s a working demo for the first two parts.
